Powhatan County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Tuesday night’s school board meeting in Powhatan had to be suspended after community members packed the meeting room.
More than a hundred people came out, filling the seats and hallways, to speak out on the alleged mishandling of racism claims within the school division. The fire marshalls told the Board to reschedule to a larger venue.
“I have some unfortunate news for everyone, news that you’re not going to like,” said school board chair Dr. James Taylor to the crowd before it was announced that the meeting would be postponed.
At issue is the school district’s alleged mishandling of racism claims within the division. The local NAACP claims a recent photo that sparked outrage was not an isolated incident. A photo which circulated online allegedly shows a Powhatan High School student with a racial slur written on her arm.
It is not known when or where a rescheduled meeting will take place.
