Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - House Republicans have rebuffed a second attempt from Democrats to try and get two constitutional amendments on the ballot this fall. The amendments would restore voting rights to previously convicted felons, as well as get rid of unconstitutional language in the constitution on gay marriage.
Democrats attempted to have the House Elections Committee reconsider the amendments. Both had earlier been voted down in sub-committee. There is some urgency to the Democrats efforts because if the amendments are not on the ballot this fall, the earliest they could appear is 2024.
Both amendments had passed the Senate. The Senate is controlled by Democrats, while the House is controlled by Republicans.
