Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond-area Congressman Donald McEachin (D) passed away Monday at age 61. The Democrat first won the minority-majority Fourth District seat in 2016, winning re-election in 2018, 2020, and again just this month. He had been battling colorectal cancer for nearly a decade.

In a statement, Senator Mark Warner (D) said Donald and Colette McEachin have been wonderful friends to me and Lisa for more than thirty years. We often bonded over stories and laughs about our mutual challenges raising families with three strong-willed daughters. Up until the very end, Don was a fighter. Even though he battled cancer and faced other trials in recent years, he never lost his focus on social and environmental justice. Tonight, Virginia has lost a great leader and I have lost a great friend.” McEachin was in the House of Delegates during a portion of Warner's term as Governor.

Meachin was married to current Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Colette McEachin. His office says it will remain open to serve constituents until a new representative is elected. The Fourth Congressional District covers Richmond all the way down to the North Carolina state line.
