Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- Several Fire and EMS departments from the greater Richmond region assembled near Browns Island for a joint training exercise.

Richmond, Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield, and Goochland Fire were in attendance, as well as the Richmond Ambulance Authority and the Metro Richmond Flying Squad, a volunteer organization who supports the first responder crews on emergency scenes.

The organizations hold joint trainings quarterly, but the decision to spend a day focusing on river rescue techniques came, according to Jim Courtney of Henrico Fire, after a tragic incident last summer, when two women died in a tubing incident near Bosher Dam.

Members of the Fire and EMS crews will roleplay as victims in need of rescue, and the rest of the crews will coordinate and respond as if the scenario were real.
