Richmond Democrats Upset Over Cuts to Early Voting Locations

City Electoral Board Now Planning to Reconsider

Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond City Democrats are loudly raising concerns after the GOP-dominated Electoral Board voted to limit early voting to just the Elections Office. The Board has now scheduled a meeting next Friday, August 4th, to take a second look at the issue.

The Elections Office is located off Laburnum Avenue near the Acca Train Yard, well outside of downtown and Southside. Last November, early voting took place at City Hall and the Hickory Hill Community Center, and Mayor Levar Stoney (D) says 25% of early voters used those locations.

State Democrats say state law limits decisions on early voting locations to the locality governing board, be it a city council or board of supervisors. The electoral board is GOP controlled because all local electoral boards have a majority that matches the party of the sitting Governor.
