Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The judge in the Amari Pollard trial Thursday ruled the jury should not consider Pollard’s actions at the Huguenot graduation shooting as self-defense.
Pollard pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and unlawful use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection with the death of Shawn Jackson. Pollard will spend 25 years in prison after receiving a 43-year sentence with 18 suspended.
So far, no one has been charged in the death of Jackson’s stepfather Lorenzo Smith or the five wounded at the Huguenot graduation shooting.
The sentencing came after Pollard took the stand on Thursday. According to Pollard’s testimony, he shot Jackson because he was scared for his life while running away from him and hearing someone say, “Shoot him.”
Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards will host a media briefing Friday at 10 a.m. in regard to Thursday’s sentencing.
