Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - In an effort to curb gun violence, the City of Richmond is hosting its second gun buyback event.
This Saturday, Richmond residents 18 and older can safely dispose of unwanted firearms and get up to $250, depending on the type of gun they turn in. Assault weapons can be exchanged for $250 in gift cards and handguns and shotguns for $200 in gift cards. Inoperable guns can be turned in, but will not be eligible for a payout. Participants can choose gift cards from more than one store.
At last year's gun buyback event, the city paid out nearly $70,000 in gift cards to Walmart, Kroger and Amazon. Police took 474 firearms, including five assault weapons and 227 handguns. This year's event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Liberation Church on Midlothian Turnpike.
