Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - September is National Emergency Preparedness Month and the normal peak of a hurricane season is September 10th. Despite the quietness in the Atlantic with hurricanes, it is still hurricane season through the end of November.
Richmond Chief Administrative Officer Lincoln Saunders says it takes one storm to make it a major hurricane season. Anthony McLean with the Office of Emergency Management says that families need to have an emergency kit and emergency supplies on hand.
Those emergency supplies include one gallon of water for each member of the family, including pets. Also, make sure there's a three-day supply of non-perishable food. McLean says the items in your emergency kit should include a flashlight with fresh batteries as well as fresh batteries for a battery-powered radio.
In addition, McLean says that people should have copies of important documents, including insurance forms and have those in a waterproof container. In addition, McLean says that Richmond city residents should have the Code Red emergency notification mobile app, which keeps you up to date on emergencies when they arise.
