Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Acting Chief of Police Rick Edwards gave details regarding crime statistics in Richmond in 2022.

Murder was down 34% last year, according to Edwards, a significant and encouraging reduction. Property theft, however, experienced a significant spike, especially car-related thefts. One of the biggest causes for this, according to Edwards, was car owners leaving their cars unlocked, and some even leaving their keys in the car. One of the most concerning statistics was that 714 guns were stolen from cars in Richmond in 2022, driven significantly by people leaving guns visible and unsecured in their cars.

Chief Edwards also gave details for the first time regarding the January 9th shooting of a suspect by a Richmond police officer. The officers were executing a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation when they say Douglas Price, who was inside, brandished a gun at them. Price was taken to a local hospital to recover. Inside the house, according to Edwards, Richmond Police found 1300 grams of cocaine, 140 grams of pressed fentanyl pills, 28 grams of powdered fentanyl, 6 pounds of cannabis, and six guns.
