Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - At Monday’s meeting, Richmond City Council voted to invest $7 million dollars to expand the homeless shelter on Chamberlayne Avenue.
The Salvation Army Central Virginia Command (CVAC) manages the site and will match the funding with at least $8 million.
The funding will be used to add 50 more beds for families, as well as single men and women. The money will also go towards turning part of the building into a community resource center and making the location an inclement weather and year-round emergency shelter.
The resource center would be run by the city as a part of its long-term plan to help homelessness in the city. Planned elements of the center include mental health support, mentorships, substance abuse counseling and more at the site. It would be a place to help people experiencing homelessness, and those at risk of it.
The shelter is located at 1900 Chamberlayne Avenue.
