Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - In a crime briefing on Thursday, Jan. 25, the Richmond Police Department said the number of traffic-related fatalities and incidents in 2023 decreased compared to the year before.
According to data from all four precincts, there were 15,356 crashes in 2023 — compared to 16,215 traffic collisions the department reported for 2022.
Law enforcement officials said the dip in crashes was partly due to environmental changes, such as the construction of speed tables and roundabouts on roadways. Police said the City’s involvement in the “Vision Zero” initiative also helped reduce the number of fatal crashes.
A total of 12,151 citations and summons were given for speeding, reckless driving, equipment violations, seatbelt violations and signal or regulatory sign violations — an increase from the 10,731 provided in 2022.
Richmond Police chief Rick Edwards said there’s still progress to be made in the push to reduce deadly crashes and accidents. Richmond Police officials have said they are “working to reduce collisions on the roadways and to make the streets more safe for all.”
