Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com)- Sunday night, an officer involved shooting on Garber Street left a man dead. Richmond's police department recieved a call around 10:45 pm from a neighbor saying there was a man on someone's porch with a gun. When the police arrived, nearly 20 minutes later, the man was still there.
Officers Richard Redford and Shannon McGarva say they asked the man to drop his weapon several times. They claim that instead, he pointed the loaded handgun towards them and began acting aggressively. Both officers let off shots that later killed the man. The victim has not been identified yet, pending notifcation of his family. The two officers are on administrative leave for 48 hours pending the investigation.
According to Chief Gerald Smith, it is unclear why the man was on the porch or his connection to the resident, who was inside the home during the incident. Smith said that mental health could've played a part but he is not sure. He said the department will review body cams and other surveillance footage they can gather to get the full story. In the meantime, he asks that anyone with any information contacts Richmond police.
