Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The rebuilding of Fox Elementary began officially today.
As construction crews lifted and placed new roof trusses on the badly-damaged but historic school building, a group of Richmond firefighters, school board members, city council representatives, and Fox students looked on. This, according to superintendent Jason Kamras, was a major step forward in the re-opening process -- a process RPS hopes to have finished by fall 2025.
Several students also said they were excited to be back in the building, even if that day was still years away. Sarah Dejnozka, 8, said she's looking forward to the start of her 5th grade year, when Fox is set to reopen. Mc'ciyah Goodnight, 6, also said she was "excited."
The 2024 budget approved by city council last night includes $15 million for Fox's rebuilding, a sum that, according to Kamras, covers the multi-million dollar funding shortage which had previously caused concerns.
