Chesterfield, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Students have returned to class this morning in Chesterfield County. Elementary school students, sixth graders, and ninth graders returned to class today, with the rest of the district starting on Tuesday.
The first day comes despite the fact that at the beginning of the month, Chesterfield had over 200 teaching vacancies. Superintendent Merv Daugherty, speaking outside Jacobs Road Elementary, said all classes will have coverage. He says it is being done with long term subs, new hires, and people with provisional licenses. All districts are facing shortages this year.
Daugherty also says every bus route is covered. Last year, it took Chesterfield most of the year to get to full coverage with bus routes, and the district had to increase pay and bonuses. The situation was so bad Daugherty asked parents to drive their kids at the beginning of the year.
