Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The 5th Congressional District recount is complete, and the result stands.
Congressman Bob Good requested and paid for the recount, which wrapped up Thursday and affirmed Sen. John McGuire’s primary win. The margin shrunk from 374 to 370 votes.
In a statement, Good said he was disappointed with the outcome but it's been his "distinct honor" to serve as the Congressional Representative for the 5th District.
“While I am disappointed in the ultimate outcome, it has been my distinct honor to serve as the congressional representative for Virginia’s 5th District over the past 3.5 years,” he wrote.
Good has served in Congress since 2021 and was one of eight Republicans who voted to oust fellow GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker in October. McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
“Mr. McGuire received more votes than Mr. Good and is the winner of this election,” Chief Judge Claude Worrell II said Thursday from the courthouse bench, concluding the recount.
The recount cost nearly $100,000.
