Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - On January 1st, Virginia eliminated the Commonwealth's portion of the grocery tax, but Wednesday, the Senate Finance Committee rejected a bill that would have allowed localities to get rid of their portion. Democrats raised concerns that localities would get rid of the tax, and then ask the General Assembly for revenue to make up the difference.
Senator Bill DeSteph (R-Virginia Beach) argued the bill just allowed localities a choice to get rid of a tax. Senator Steve Newman (R-Lynchburg) said lawmakers last year determined the tax was regressive, and localities would be allowed to make that own determination themselves.
The grocery tax now sits at one percent, which goes completely to localities.
