Washington, D.C. (Newsradiowrva.com) - With a government shutdown growing more likely by the minute, Senators Mark Warner (D) and Tim Kaine (D) are introducing a bill to grant federal contract workers backpay. Federal employees do get backpay if government shuts down, but contract workers do not have such assurances.
Maryland's Senators have signed on as well. The areas around Washington likely have large numbers of these workers, which according to the Senators, are not highly paid. The Senators say many of these are custodians, cafeteria workers, and security staff.
Both Senators also attempted this in 2019 during the last government shutdown.
