Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Virginia Department of Health is asking Virginians not to swim, tube, or kayak in a stretch of the James River going from Robious Landing Park in Chesterfield Couty down to Belle Isle in Richmond. A sewer main in Goochland County burst Tuesday evening, sending 300,000 gallons of raw sewage into a tributary and then into the James River.
VDH says ingesting the water, or getting it on open cuts, could lead to illness. The main was closed Tuesday evening so the leak is no longer ouccuring. The stretch of the river is popular for activities.
The Department of Environmental Quality is testing the water and hopes to allow VDH to have an update on Friday.
