Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - I-95 in the Fredericksburg area is "a sheet of ice for 40 miles," says Governor Ralph Northam, addressing an issue that has taxed the Commonwealth for the last 24 hours. Drivers have been stuck in the snow and ice backup for nearly a day, with the interstate closed from Carmel Church all the way through Fredericksburg.

Among those in the backup is Senator Tim Kaine (D), who left Monday at one to head to Washington. Kaine tweeted about the experience:

Kaine was heading north; Jim Defede, a television reporter in Miami, was heading south. He also tweeted, and spoke to WRVA from his car. He says he went 12 hours without seeing any state response, however, people have been helpful and sharing water. He says people are conserving fuel as they can.

Northam insists the issue is not a manpower one, but rather, getting the manpower to where it is needed. He says the National Guard is on stand-by. Meanwhile, incoming House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) says the best time to call the Guard was last night, the second best time is now. VDOT was looking for plow drivers over the fall.
