Hurley, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- Governor Ralph Northam declared a State of Emergency ahead of Ida, but even before the former hurricane came through, the town of Hurley in Southwest Virginia was dealing with a disaster. A rainstorm caused flooding in the town of Hurley, in Buchanan County, on Monday, causing massive damage.

VDEM is currently out in Hurley doing damage assessment of over 300 homes. VDEM's Tim Estes says 10 homes were taken off of their foundations, and a major road is basically wiped out in spots.

Estes says it could take years to completely recover. He also says rescues were necessary Monday, describing one where deputies had to swing from a railroad bridge to rescue a woman in a mobile home that had been swept by waters.
