Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah), in an interview with WRVA's "Richmond's Morning News with John Reid," says he will look into the State Capitol's removed Confederate statuary when "he can come up for air." Former House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn (D-Fairfax) had a statue of Robert E. Lee removed in 2020 from the spot he accepted Confederate command. The removal came during a period of racial reckoning in Virginia and nationwide.
Gilbert, who is still in the middle of the General Assembly session, says he is currently far more focused on things that are less "symbolic" but more "impactful" on Virginians. Gilbert became speaker right as session began in Janaury. Gilbert says he isn't even sure where the statue and other removed items are located.
Filler-Corn was fined for not complying with a FOIA request surrounding the removals.
