Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Richmond Staples Mill Amtrak station will receive $5.8 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of an initiative to expand and secure rail travel.

Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner announced the funding, saying the investments in rail will "create jobs, cut costs, and give you the freedom to get where you need to go."

The money will allow the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority to upgrade two platforms and add a canopy over them. It will also go towards adding 10 Amtrack trains to the schedule.

“The $5.8 million that's coming from the federal government, matched with the $5.8 million that we're bringing, will allow us to improve the experience of the station and make sure that we are taking care of this important asset,” said Virginia Passenger Rail Authority Executive Director DJ Stadtler.

Construction is expected to start in early 2026. The entire project, which impacts the Staples Mill Amtrak Station, is set to be completed in 2027.
