Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Ahead of what could be a very big week in the murder cases surrounding Irvo Otieno's death, the Virginia NAACP has released a statement. The statement comes as the grand jury is scheduled to receive the case Tuesday, and the video surrounding Otieno's death is expected to be released.
In the statement, the state NAACP says, “Again we have witnessed the death of a Black man at the hands of law enforcement. We applaud the swift decision of the Commonwealth Attorney to charge the seven sheriff’s deputies and three hospital workers with second-degree murder. Nonetheless, there is a need to change how law enforcement responds to mental health crises.”
The NAACP says it will continue to advocate for mental health funding.
