Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - State Police will be out in great numbers this holiday weekend on the highways making sure you're getting to your destination safely.
State Police spokeswoman Shelby Crouch says that police will be taking part in Operation CARE, or Crash Awareness Reduction Effort. That aims to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries as it relates to impaired driving, speeding or failing to use seat belts. In addition, police will be participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which will consist of sobriety checkpoints.
Last year, a total of ten people died in traffic crashes in Virginia during the Labor Day weekend. That was a decrease of ten from last year.
Crouch says they're still seeing triple-digit speeders on the road, but they've become less common now that roads are more congested after the brunt of the pandemic. Crouch says they're still seeing in a lot of fatal crashes that people were not wearing their seat belt.
