Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - As part of its Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.), Virginia State Police will be increasing patrols beginning at 12:01 a.m. July 3 through midnight July 4.

On July 4, state police will have all available uniformed resources on highways across the Commonwealth. Police encourage everyone to obey the laws of the road and to drive sober, or have an alternate plan in place if they do plan to drink.

"We're just asking folks to add travel safety to those celebratory plans," says Corinne Geller, VSP.

During the 2022 Independence Day four-day weekend, police say they arrested 69 impaired drivers and cited 4,262 speeders and 1,585 reckless drivers as part of Operation C.A.R.E. This year, VSP is encouraging those celebrating the 4th of July to do so safely.

"Make sure you have a means of getting to and from -- whether it's across the state, across the country, or just across the street," says Geller. "Just making sure that you've got a smart plan in advance, so that when you're out there, you're driving smart, you're driving safe, and you're driving sober."
