Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- The State Supreme Court, in two rulings, has cleared the way for Virginia to remove the Lee Monument from Lee Circle. The monument is the sole Confederate Monument remaining on Monument Avenue. Governor Ralph Northam announced plans to remove it in June 2020.
Opponents of removal had argued the Commonwealth was required, by deeds, to always care and maintain the monument. The Court ruled those agreements forced the Commonwealth to display a message which with it now disagrees. Fencing has been up around the Monument for some time to prepare for its removal.
Both decisions were unanimous.
