Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to allow Virginia to resume its purge of suspected noncitizens from voter rolls. The state says the decision is aimed at stopping people who are not U.S. citizens from voting.

"We are pleased by the Supreme Court’s order today," Governor Glenn Youngkin told Fox News in a statement. Youngkin described the decision as a "victory for commonsense and election fairness."

"I am grateful for the work of Attorney General Jason Miyares on this critical fight to protect the fundamental rights of U.S. citizens," he added.

The justices granted an emergency appeal from Virginia’s Republican administration. A federal judge had previously found that the state illegally purged more than 1,600 voter registrations in the last two months.

At issue was whether the voter removal process violated a law that requires states to halt “systematic” voter roll maintenance for a 90-period before an election. Youngkin issued an executive order in August requiring daily checks of DMV data against voter rolls to identify noncitizens.

“Clean voter rolls are one important part of a comprehensive approach we are taking to ensure the fairness of our elections,” Youngkin said Wednesday.
