Newport News, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Early Tuesday morning, Christopher Newport University (CNU) Police posted an urgent alert on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying officers responded to reports of gunshots on campus in the vicinity of the David Student Union.
“Campus Police reported evidence of gunshots and broken glass near the north portico of the student union facing the Great Lawn," the University said in a statement posted at 4:19 a.m. "An individual and a firearm are in police custody."
Officials say there’s no threat to the community. The University is operating under normal conditions on Tuesday, with classes going on as scheduled. The suspect in custody is not connected to the school, according to police.
"The individual may have sustained non-life threatening injuries and no one else was injured," CNU said in a statement. "Police said there was no threat to campus and asked that people avoid the portico. The status of Regattas, a campus dining hall inside the David Student Union, will be closed until further notice."
