Newport News, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - For the first time since she was shot by a six-year old at Richneck Elementary in January, Abagail Zwerner is speaking publicly. Zwerner did an exclusive interview with NBC's Today Show, which aired Tuesday morning.
In the interview, Zwerner says will always remember the six-year old's face, prior to him shooting her. She still has bullet fragments in her chest. Zwerner says much of getting her students out of the classroom remains a blur, and she actually believed she had died when she passed out in the office.
Zwerner says some days are better than others, and some days, she cannot get out of bed. Her lawyer told NBC a lawsuit against the district is coming in the next two weeks. School officials were allegedly told multiple times the six-year old may have a gun, but he was only searched once. The Commonwealth's Attorney in Newport News has said the boy will not face charges, but no determination has been made on the parents. The parents say the boy is receiving medical attention for an "acute disability."
