Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - AAA says Thanksgiving travel will set new records this year, with nearly 80 million Americans expected to travel 50 miles or more for the holiday. This year’s 2.7% increase surpasses pre-pandemic levels.
In the Commonwealth, more than 2 million people are expected to travel over the Thanksgiving holiday. Ninety-two percent of Virginians who will be traveling will be hitting the road to get to their holiday destination – that’s up more than a percentage point from last year.
AAA recommends avoiding peak traffic times, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, and using traffic apps for smoother travel. Traffic updates in Virginia are available through Virginia 511.
As far as prices at the pump, AAA spokesperson Morgan Dean says drivers “have some reason to be thankful at the gas pumps this year.”
Virginia’s average gas price is below $3 per gallon and “nearing some of the lowest prices we’ve seen all year long,” Dean says. “Many Virginia localities have gas price averages below $3, and several states bordering the commonwealth, including Kentucky and Tennessee, have state averages below $2.80 per gallon.”
