Henrico, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A water main break in Varina led to three area schools closing Tuesday.
The Henrico Department of Public Utilities (DPU) was notified of the break just after 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19. It affected a portion of Messer Road, prompting Henrico Schools to close George F. Baker Elementary, John Rolfe Middle, and Varina High School.
“The break occurred on Messer in an area that necessitates extensive repair,” Henrico Police said.
A detour will direct traffic off Messer Road around the work zone. The DPU says it expects to restore water and reopen the road by 6 p.m.
The water main break is believed to have been caused by low overnight temperatures.
"We will send an update to families once repairs to the water line are complete," Henrico County Public Schools said in a statement.
