Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) The 1887 time capsule that was found in the Robert E. Lee pedestal was opened on Wednesday afternoon at the State Department of Historic Resources.
Among the items found were three books, an envelope and a coin. A photograph was believed to have been found in the envelope. State Department of Historic Resources officials say that they will need more time to specifically identify the items.
The opening of the capsule took a little longer than anticipated because the capsule is made of lead. Special tools were needed to work around mortar and corrosion in an attempt to open the lid.
All the items were wet with condensation and had to be stabilized so they could be further examined.
