Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Just before 7 this morning, an off-duty Richmond firefighter called in a fire after he spotted smoke coming from a home. Crews were dispatched and rescued two people from inside within minutes of their arrival. Those two residents were transported to a local hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The fire was marked under control at 7:59 am, and the fire investigations unit is still working to determine the cause of the fire.
As even colder weather approaches and many will seek to heat their homes, the fire department is reminding people to be safe with auxiliary heaters. Keep them 3 feet away from anything flammable, never leave them unattended, keep them out of reach of children and pets, and plug them into wall outlets rather than extension cords. Now is also a good time to check your smoke alarms -- the fire marshal's office offers free smoke alarms for those in need of a new one.
