Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- Two Richmond elementary schools -- Fairfield Court and Cardinal -- started classes today. These two schools are serving as the pilot program for Richmond's new RPS200 program.

The program adds 20 instruction days to the existing 180 on the calendar. RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras, principal Angela Wright, mayor Levar Stoney, State Superintendent Lisa Coons, and several members of Fairfield Court Elementary staff all expressed their excitement over the program. Several speakers, including Mayor Stoney, also expressed their hope that the 200-day instruction calendar would expand to other Richmond schools.

While other year-round school schedules, like Hopewell's, also begin around this time, they still adhere to a 180 instruction day calendar. RPS is the first system in the area to add an additional twenty instruction days.
