Richmond, Va. (NewsradioWRVA.com) - Longtime Richmond Spider Men's Basketball Coach Chris Mooney is expected to miss the remainder of the season as he undergoes heart surgery next week. The surgery is needed to remove an aneurysm in his aorta. The surgery will be performed at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Mooney says he doesn't feel any discomfort presently and he's not experiencing shortness of breath. His recovery period is expected to last four to eight weeks.
Mooney says the issue came up during a recent physical and a CT scan. Mooney says it was difficult to tell the team, which he did before addressing the media Friday afternoon.
The 50 year old Mooney has been the head coach at Richmond for 18 seasons. Assistant Coach Peter Thomas will be interim coach during Mooney's absence
