Pound, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Virginia Department of Corrections says it is investigating the death of an inmate at Red Onion State Prison.
On Thursday, Aug. 24, at around 2:30 p.m., an inmate reported to prison staff that his cell partner had fallen out of their top bunk bed. Staff reportedly entered and found the inmate unresponsive. Lifesaving efforts were performed but were unsuccessful.
The inmate was transported to Dickenson Community Hospital and was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m. The incident is being investigated by the VADOC's Special Investigations Unit.
