Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Virginia Fire Season began on October 15, and the VA Department of Forestry is asking people to be cautious and to be prepared for fire risks in the coming months. The most common cause of wildfires in Virginia is debris burning. Yard waste burns are common this time of year, and the season's dry conditions and breezy winds mean fires can get out of control quickly.

If choosing to burn yard debris, the Department of Forestry recommends taking several safety precautions, including:
- Avoid burning on dry, windy days
- Keep your pile small
- Have a rake or shovel on hand
-Keep a charged water hose nearby
-Have a phone ready to call 911 if a fire escapes your control
-Stay with your fire until it’s completely out (drown, stir, ensure it’s cool)

Additionally, a number of "green alternatives" to debris burns exist, such as composting or finding a local business who accepts yard waste.

The Department of Forestry also recommends having an evacuation plan for your household in case of forest fires. Have a meeting point in case of evacuation, and ready access to everything you need to take with you.
