Chesterfield, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- The Virginia Department of Emergency Management held an event this morning to kick off Hurricane Season in Virginia, which begins June 1.
VDEM State Coordinator Shawn Talmadge said that, while this season is expected to be more severe than usual, the Department's preparation will be similar to years past. They intend to be prepared to address hurricane impacts across the state, he said, from winds on the coast to heavy rainfall in central and western Virginia.
Governor Youngkin also spoke at the event, praising VDEM's preparation efforts and saying that the central message to Virginians in a hurricane is "run from water, hide from wind."
