Richmond, Va. (Newwsradiowrva.com) - The Virginia High School League says it is not changing its policy for transgender athletes, despite new model policies released by the Youngkin Administration's Department of Education. The new policies say sports team participation should be determined by sex at birth. The VHSL policy allows students to ask for a waiver to play on teams matching their gender identity.
VHSL Executive Director Billy Haun says the policy has been in effect since 2014, and they did not adjust even when the Northam Administration put out its own transgender policy. Haun also says the policy is just a guideline, not a requirement.
Last year, in the entire Commonwealth, ten students asked for a waiver, and nine were granted.
