Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Despite a spate of pedestrian deaths in May, Virginia pedestrian deaths are down this year. There have been 89 deaths in 2023, as compared to 112 at this time in 2022. However, DMV Spokeswoman Jillian Cowherd says they are seeing a big jump in deaths among younger people, specifically, people in their 30s.

Cowherd says currently, 30-year-olds make up 25% of pedestrian deaths, compared to 10% last year. Usually, the highest percentage is among those in their 60s.

Cowherd says people need to cross in designated crossing areas, and wear reflective clothing at night. Using a flashlight also helps. Cowherd also says if you are crossing, look at the driver and make sure he or she sees you.
