Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Although nobody in Virginia had the jackpot-winning Powerball ticket in Wednesday's drawing, a player in Northern Virginia won $1 million and five people in Virginia won $50,000 prizes.
One ticket nationwide matched all six numbers to win the $1.725 billion jackpot. That ticket was bought in California.
All together, more than 145,000 tickets in Virginia won prizes in Wednesday's drawing. Virginia Lottery said ticket sales in the Commonwealth ultimately generated around $30 million for K-12 public education.
"Through all of those drawings, when the Powerball jackpot was growing, up to that very large jackpot for Wednesday night, Powerball sales in Virginia generated more than $30 million in profit," said John Hagerty, Virginia Lottery spokesperson. "By law, all of that profit goes to K-12 education in Virginia."
