Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Virginia State Police (VSP) say five people died in four traffic crashes during the 48-hour statistical period designated for the July 4, 2023 holiday.

Police also investigated more than 370 crashes, arrested 36 drivers for driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, and cited more than 2,000 speeders and 980 reckless drivers. Troopers also issued 254 citations for individuals not buckling up and another 74 citations for children not being buckled up, according to preliminary data.

During the holiday, VSP had all available uniformed resources on state highways as part of its Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.), a state-sponsored program that aims to prevent traffic casualties.

Although the July 4 holiday is behind us, we're still in the height of summer travel season. Police are reminding Virginians to be vigilant when it comes to traffic safety.

"State troopers can't be everywhere all the time, so we really need Virginians to put forth the extra effort," says Corinne Geller, VSP. "Comply with posted speed limits, buckle up everyone in your vehicle, and put the phone down -- drive distraction-free. That's how we save lives on our highways."
