Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor Youngkin has declared a state of emergency ahead of the first winter storm of 2025.
Forecasts indicate that a powerful winter storm will begin affecting Central Virginia starting Sunday evening and continuing into Monday. Projected amounts vary across the state, but the snow and freezing rain will likely be significant enough to impact travel.
In a statement, Youngkin urged Virginians to take precautions and stay up to date on the weather forecast.
“I am declaring a state of emergency for the incoming winter storm currently forecasted to impact Virginia starting Sunday, and I’m encouraging all Virginians, visitors, and travelers to stay alert, monitor the weather forecast, and prepare now for any potential impacts,” Youngkin said.
VDOT has been pre-treating roads since Friday morning. Youngkin says state and local officials will continue to monitor the forecast and respond through the weekend.
“Given the current projected size of the storm, if your post-holiday travel plans have you leaving Sunday, I encourage you to adjust those plans to leave on Saturday," Youngkin said. "If you find yourself needing to be on the roadways, please heed any warnings and make sure you are keeping yourselves and others safe."
