Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- Starting on Saturday, July 1, Virginia's Move Over laws are expanding. It will now be required by law that all vehicles on the highway must slow down and move over if possible for any stationary vehicle displaying hazard lights, a warning symbol, flares, or lights of blue, red, or amber.
According to AAA's Morgan Dean, 28 people died between 2016 and 2020 on the side of Virginia roadways while outside of disabled vehicles. At the new law's announcement, several family members of Virginians killed in such incidents were present, including the sisters of Angela Hurley, who was killed in 2022, and the wife of Lieutenant Michael Clark, a Hanover firefighter who was killed in 2018.
Both of Hurley's sisters -- Alexis Wells and Latane Flanagan -- emphasized the importance of this law, and Melanie Clark begged Virginia's drivers to be careful and to follow the new law.
