Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Changes are coming to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). Project coordinators recently shared a preliminary look at the “McGlothlin Wing II,” the museum’s largest expansion project in its history.
Once completed, the new design will make the VMFA the fourth-largest art museum in the country behind the Met in New York City, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
Officials say the $261 million, 173,000 square-foot expansion aims to blur the line between the interior and exterior of the building. The new wing will rise on the museum's west and south facades, in front of the sculpture garden.
American art will be at the forefront of the new space, but it will also house the country's second-largest exhibition of African art.
The museum expects to share the final renderings and hold the official groundbreaking in 2025. The expansion is expected to open in 2028. More information can be found on the VMFA’s website.
