Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The State Forestry Department says Thursday presented an elevated fire risk, thanks to low humidity, a breeze, and warm temperatures. In addition, there is fuel on the ground in the form of branches knocked down by February's ice storms.
Forestry Department Spokeswoman Michelle Stoll says people, in these conditions, should be wary of doing anything that creates a spark. Smoking ashes and chains dragging can both start fires. She also asks people do not burn debris in these conditions.
Virginia is in its spring fire season, which is traditionally the more problematic of the two. There is a ban on burning prior to 4pm until the end of April.
