Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - With the death Monday of Congressman Donald McEachin (D), the Fourth Congressional District (Richmond to the North Carolina line) is without representation in Congress. James Madison University Political Expert Robert Roberts says it is up to Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) to set a date for a special election to replace McEachin. There is no required deadline.
Roberts expects a number of Democrats to explore the possibility of running. Among those he expects to consider it are State Senator Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond), State Senator Joe Morrissey (D-Petersburg), and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney (D). The district is minority-majority and heavily Democratic. Roberts also thinks it's possible McEachin's wife, Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney Colette McEachin, could emerge as a compromise candidate.
McEachin just won re-election in November.
