Washington, D.C. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Senator Tim Kaine (D) says with a new Speaker now in place in the House of Representatives, he believes a continuing resolution will likely be signed before November 17th, the day the government would shut down. Kaine says the continuing resolution would likely go until the end of 2023. It was a continuing resolution in September which lead to the vote that ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
McCarthy agreed to a continuing resolution over the objection of a small group of far-right Republicans that wanted deeper cuts than what was agreed to by all parties during negotiations over the debt ceiling. Kaine says negotiations for a full budget will likely not be easy.
Senator Mark Warner (D) meanwhile, says the best way to get an agreement is for everyone to stick to the deal agreed to around the debt ceiling. Warner again says a shutdown will have negative effects, because while federal workers will get paid, federal contractors may not, and it hurts other planning as well.
