Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) gave his second major speech in two days Monday, addressing a joint session of the General Assembly at the non-traditional time of 4pm. The Republican provided more specifics to his plans than in his inaugural speech Saturday, although still spoke mostly in generalities about his proposals.
Youngkin addressed his executive order on school masks, calling it "a matter of individual liberty." However, he did not explain how he would force districts to provide opt-outs to parents on mask rules. He also promised additional funding for schools and law enforcement, and drew one of his biggest GOP cheers when he promised a veto of any bill doing away with "right to work."
The Democratic response was offered, in part, by former House Speaker Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn (D-Fairfax). Filler-Corn says Youngkin's proposals will move the Commonwealth back from two years of progress made under Democratic control. She also suggested that lifting mask mandates will put at risk in-person school.
The Youngkin administration did not respond to questions as to why the speech was held at 4pm as compared to the usual 7pm.
