Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) has issued his first veto of his term. The bill vetoed by Youngkin would have allowed Arlington to appoint a independent police auditor to oversee the police department.
In his veto announcement, Youngkin called the bill "anti-law enforcement" and said the way to ensure bad actors are held accountable is to "stand up for law enforcement, not "tear them down or subject them to politically-motivated inquiries." Supporters of the measure say it was just a local control bill that would have brought transparency and accountability to policing.
The bill narrowly passed the Democratically-controlled Senate, but had a 30 vote margin in the Republican-controlled House of Delegates.
